Building GNU Typist for Mac OS

GNU Typist is a great source for learning touch typing. You can install it on your own at your Mac. Just follow the steps.

1. Get the source of typist

curl http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gtypist/gtypist-2.9.tar.gz -o gtypist-2.9.tar.gz
tar zxf gtypist-2.9.tar.gz

2. Get the source of ncurses

curl http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/ncurses/ncurses-6.0.tar.gz -o ncurses-6.0.tar.gz
tar zxf ncurses-6.0.tar.gz

3. Get the source of typespeed

curl http://typespeed.sourceforge.net/typespeed-0.6.5.tar.gz -o typespeed-0.6.5.tar.gz
tar zxf typespeed-0.6.5.tar.gz

4. Create place where you want to have all the stuff

mkdir ~/opt/usr

5. Build ncurses

# pay attention to --enable-widec
cd ncurses-6.0
./configure --enable-widec --with-shared --prefix=$HOME/opt/usr/
make; make install

6. Build GNU Typist

cd gtypist-2.9
export LDFLAGS="-L$HOME/opt/usr/lib"
export CFLAGS="-I$HOME/opt/usr/include"
./configure --prefix=$HOME/opt/usr/
make; make install

7. Run gnutypist

cd $HOME/opt/usr/bin
./gnutypist

8. Build typespeed

cd typespeed-0.6.5
./configure --prefix=$HOME/opt/usr/
make; make install

9. run typespeed

cd $HOME/opt/usr/bin
./typespeed
